Why I Switched to Using an Apple Watch as My Phone in 2024 (Leaving my iPhone at Home)

In 2023, I realized how distracting my phone had become. While I've always loved researching things, having instant access to information through my phone and platforms like ChatGPT made it easy to get pulled in, often in an addictive way. I wanted to make a change. When I discovered that the new Apple Ultra Watch offers 36 hours of battery life, I saw an opportunity to make that change. If you're in a similar situation or just curious about the idea, this post outlines the benefits I’ve experienced in 2024, the disadvantages, and my plans for 2025.
Benefits of Using the Apple Watch as a Phone
1. Avoiding Distractions
The biggest benefit of switching to using an Apple Watch is the reduction in distractions. If you don’t see distraction as a major issue, this system may not be for you. However, if you’re like me and find it difficult to stay focused with your phone constantly drawing you in, this method can be a game-changer. By leaving my phone behind, I have the chance to think more clearly, enjoy moments instead of trying to capture them on camera, and connect with people around me more authentically. It allows me to be present in the moment, free from the constant temptation to check my phone. If you struggle with phone addiction, this could be the perfect solution.2. Boosting Productivity
A major advantage is the increase in productivity. I don’t receive text alerts on my watch, and instead, I dedicate a specific time each day to respond to messages. If someone really needs to reach me, they can call. If I want to research something, I use my watch’s shortcut button to record a quick voice memo about what I want to look up and then do the research on my computer, which is faster and more efficient than trying to search on a small phone screen. The watch makes it much harder to mindlessly browse the web, and that’s a huge advantage for staying focused.
Disadvantages of Using the Apple Watch
1. Weaker Cell Reception and Phone Calls
One downside is that the watch doesn’t have the same strong cell signal as a phone. It can be harder to hear and make calls, especially in noisy environments. If you’re someone who gets a lot of phone calls, you’ll likely need to carry AirPods or a similar device with you, as having a conversation on the watch alone can be challenging.
2. No Camera
Another downside is the lack of a camera. While many people are accustomed to taking photos, this might actually feel liberating to some. Instead of trying to capture everything, you can focus on experiencing the moment. If taking pictures is a big part of your life, though, this could be a dealbreaker.
3. Limited Navigation Features
Apple Watch navigation has improved, and it even offers a handy pulse feature to guide you on your route. However, it can be difficult to compare multiple destinations or plan multi-step routes on the watch. If you’re the type of person who likes to have multiple options at your fingertips, this could be limiting. Planning your routes ahead of time and entering them into your calendar is a good workaround, but it might not be ideal for everyone.
4. Missing QR Code Scanning and Apps
With the Apple Watch, you lose the ability to scan QR codes or use certain apps that you might rely on. Depending on your needs, this could be a significant disadvantage.
